Interactive map caveats
The following is a summary of the limitations of this mapping tool. They are limited to this tool and the WMS server and are not a limitation of the IBTrACS dataset.
- Maps resulting from WMS can not span the dateline, so the South Pacific Ocean is broken into two basins: Southeast and Southwest Pacific.
- WMS lines require an attribute be constant for the entire line, so cyclone tracks colors are assigned according to the maximum intensity the cyclone attained.
- IBTrACS reports 10-min maximum sustained winds, so the traditional Saffir-Simpson categories were converted to 10-min using a scaling factor of 0.88.
- Wind speeds listed in the drop-down menu are the 10-min equivalents of the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Scale
