 Establishments Covered

This sector includes establishments that provide Health Care, Social Assistance, or both Health Care and Social services to assist individuals. The services provided are delivered by health practitioners, social workers, and other trained professionals. NAICS classifies establishments in the Health Care and Social Assistance sector using numbers that start with 62.

The Economic Census covers all Health Care and Social Assistance establishments that operated during all or part of calendar year 2007. Coverage includes care or assistance provided in institutions, professional offices, homes and other locations. Examples include physicians, dentists, chiropractors, and optometrists offices; physical therapy, mental health, substance abuse, and family planning centers; medial and diagnostic testing centers; home health care and ambulance services; medial, surgical and psychiatric hospitals; nursing and residential care facilities; community food services; temporary shelters; and day care centers.

 Census Mail Package

Health Care and Social Assistance establishments with paid employees will receive a census mail package with several types of materials. The materials are similar in content, but customized to make reporting easier for different groups of covered establishments. Each establishment will receive either an Information Sheet and Census form, or a Classification form.

Information Sheets provide general information about the Census and instructions for reporting selected items on the Census form. Information sheets for Health Care and Social Assistance services establishments are numbered SV-xx(x).

Census Forms describe each data item for Health Care and Social Assistance services establishments, and provide instructions and formats for reporting them. Census forms for sector establishments are numbered HC-62xxx.
