The State
Legislature placed the Nevada State Public Defender's Office
within the Department of Health and Human Services in
the 1980s to meet the
state’s responsibility to provide assistance of counsel to
indigent adults in criminal cases and to indigent juveniles
in juvenile court in those counties with populations under
100,000 which do not have a county public defender office.
The Governor
appoints the Nevada State Public Defender for a term of four
years, who reports directly to the Governor and the Director
of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services.
