News from Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo

Guam Receives First Stimulus Funds

GHURA Receives $2m for Housing Development and Modernization

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 25, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Bordallo today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has released a $2,000,000 direct grant to the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The direct grant received today is to be directed towards the rehabilitation and retrofitting of public housing units, including increasing the energy efficiency of these units and making critical safety repairs.  The announcement of this grant award comes one week after President Obama signed H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law.  The grant awarded to GHURA today is part of the $140,000,000 in formula grants available to Guam’s local government as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Guam’s local government received the first of H.R. 1’s stimulus funds today,” Congresswoman Bordallo said today. “The financial assistance received through this grant will assist GHURA in the rehabilitation and retrofitting of public housing units on Guam.  In total, Guam is eligible for more than $140,000,000 in financial assistance provided by the recovery package, and I am excited to see that the implementation of the recovery package has already reached Guam.  At yesterday’s IGIA meeting, I emphasized coordination between federal agencies and territorial governments in the distribution of formula grants, and I look forward to our local government receiving more financial assistance through the recovery package.”
