Pelosi Statement on President Obama Creating White House Council on Women and Girls
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today after President Obama signed an Executive Order creating the White House Council on Women and Girls, which will provide a coordinated federal response to the challenges confronted by women and girls and ensure that all Cabinet and Cabinet-level agencies consider how their policies and programs impact women and families.
“As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we also celebrate a new President who recognizes that every issue is a women’s issue. On all the most pressing issues of our time, including the economy, health care, child care, and education, President Obama is ensuring that the perspective of women of all ages is integrated into all aspects of the work of his Administration.
“Congress is partnering with the Obama Administration to address some of the most pressing needs facing women in our nation. We have passed, and the President has signed into law, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to restore the ability of women and all workers to access our judicial system when they have been harmed by discrimination. Recognizing that the economic security of women is central to the economic security of all Americans, we have enacted economic recovery bill that will create or save 3.5 million jobs. In these difficult economic times for our nation, women are facing great challenges supporting themselves and their families. Congress and the Administration will continue to partner to strengthen our economy.
“I applaud President Obama’s initiative in creating the White House Council on Women and Girls and look forward to continuing to work with the Administration to expand opportunities for all Americans.”
