1. The maximum temperature on October 1st, 2000 reached 98 degrees F at the Lubbock, TX. This broke the previous daily record of 93 degrees F set in 1997 and also tied the monthly October record set back in 1979. (See Numbers 5 and 7).
2. The maximum temperature on October 1st, 2000 reached 96 degrees F at the Dodge City, KS. This broke the previous daily record of 94 degrees F set in 1938 and tied the record high for October set on the 14th in 1968. Records for the station date back to 1874. (Compare with Numbers 11!).
3. The maximum temperature on October 1st, 2000 reached 98 degrees F at Hill City, KS. This broke the previous daily record of 95 degrees F set in 1954 and also broke the monthly October record of 97 degrees F set on October 2nd, 1997. (Compare with Number 10!)
4. The maximum temperature on October 2nd, 2000 reached 101 degrees F at Midland, TX. This broke the previous daily record of 97 degrees F set in 1951 and also broke the monthly October record of 100 degrees F set on October 8nd, 1979. (Compare with Numbers 23).
5. The maximum temperature on October 2nd, 2000 reached 99 degrees F at Lubbock, TX. This broke the previous daily record of 92 degrees F set in 1920 and also broke the monthly October record of 98 degrees F set on October 8nd, 1979 and just yesterday, October 1st, 2000. (Compare with numbers 23).
6. The maximum temperature on October 3rd, 2000 reached 99 degrees F at Amarillo, TX. This broke the previous daily record of 93 degrees F set in 1925 and 1954 and also broke the monthly October record of 95 degrees F set in 1954.
7. The maximum temperature on October 3rd, 2000 reached 100 degrees F at Lubbock, TX. This broke the previous daily record of 94 degrees F set in 1929 and also broke the monthly October record of 99 degrees F set just yesterday on October 2nd, 2000. October 3rd was the third consecutive day of record setting temperatures at the station. (Compare with numbers 23).
8. The maximum temperature on October 3rd, 2000 reached 102 degrees F at Wichita Falls, TX. This broke the previous daily record of 101 degrees F set in 1951 and also tied the record high temperature for the month of October.
9. Numerous daily record low temperatures were set or tied in Washington, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, and Nebraska on the morning of October 6th, 2000 as an arctic air mass progressed slowly southward into the U.S. Cut Bank, MT recorded a new daily record low of 9 degrees F, making it the third consecutive morning of record cold at that location. Other daily record lows included 12 degrees F at Havre, MT; 10 degrees F at West Yellowstone, ID; and 15 degrees F at Dickinson, ND.
10. In addition to setting record low temperatures for the day at dozen of U.S. station on the 7th and 8th, several stations on October 8, 2000 recorded their lowest temperature for so early in the season. Some of these records were: 10 degrees F at Brookings, SD; 13 degrees F at Norfolk, NE; 14 Degrees F at Hill City, KS (also a record low for the entire month of October; See also No. 3); 17 degrees F at Lincoln, NE; 17 degrees F at Sioux City, IA; 18 degrees F at McCook, NE; 20 degrees F at Goodland, KS; 22 degrees F at Omaha, NE; 30 degrees F at Tulsa, OK; and 35 degrees F at Little Rock, AR.
11. The 18 degree F reading at Dodge City, KS on October 8, 2000 was the ealiest it had been this cold in the season since records have been kept which date back to 1874. The earliest it had been this cold was on October 23, 1917 when a low of 13 degrees F was recorded. (Compare with No 2!).
12. As the arctic air continued to spread southward on October 8, 2000, it continued to set impressive records all the way to the Mexican border. Just before midnight on October 7, the temperature dropped to 55 degrees F at the Brownsville Airport. This tied the record low for October 7th set in 1915. Continuing after midnight, the 55 degrees F also set a record low high for October 8th. The old record low high was 67 degrees set in 1967. The new record of 55 degrees for October 8th was also the coldest maximum ever for so early in the season. Later, just before midnight of October 8th, the temperature fell to 45 degrees F, setting a new record low minimum temperature for the date and a new record for the coldest temperature ever for so early in the season. It was also the earliest the temperature had ever plunged into the 40's.
13. The high temperature in Del Rio, TX on October 8, 2000 was 47 degrees F at 346 AM. This broke the previous record for the coldest high temperature on October 8th of 65 degrees F set in 1978. This also broke the all time record for the coldest high temperature for Del Rio in October. The previous record was 48 degrees F on October 23rd, 1936. As the temperature fell during the evening hours, a new record low minimum for the date was set when the temperature fell to 42 degrees F at 1023 PM.
14. Daily record low maximum temperatures were set in many areas of Texas and also in the central and eastern U.S. on October 8th, 2000
15. Cold arctic air continued to spread eastward during Sunday night, October 8, 2000. A new daily minimum temperature record for the date was set around 11 PM at the Custom House in downtown Charleston, SC when the temperature fell to 49 degrees F, eclipsing the previous record for the day of 51 degrees F set in 1988. This new daily minimum record occurred only two days after a maximum high temperatrure record had been set on October 6, 2000.
16. Dozens of daily minimum temperature records throughout the central states and the South were set on October 9, 2000. These readings ranged from 14 degrees F at Atlantic, IA to 46 degrees F at Jacksonville, FL.
17. The temperature at Bartlesville, OK sank to 17 degrees F on the morning of October 9, 2000. Not only did this set a new daily record and a new record for coldest so early in the season, but also established a new all time cold record for the month of October.
18. The temperature at Brownsville, TX plunged to 44 degrees F on October 9, 2000. This broke the previous record for the day of 48 degrees F established exactly 100 years earlier in 1900. The 44 degrees reading also established a record for the coldest so early in the season for the second morning in a row.
19. In addition to setting record low temperatures for the day, several stations on October 9, 2000 recorded the lowest temperature for so early in the season. Some of these records were: 21 degrees F at Gilbert, AR; and 34 degrees F at Hot Springs, AR.
20. The temperature at Huntsville, AL fell to 29 degrees F on October 9. This established a new minimum temperature record for the day, having previously been 38 degrees F set in 1978. The new record on October 9 was also the earliest in the season that a freezing temperature was reached in Huntsville. The earliest freeze was previously established on October 20, 1964.
21. The temperature at Wichita Falls, TX fell to 31 degrees F on October 9. In addition to setting a new daily record low, it was also the earliest freeze on record at Wichita Falls. The previous earliest freeze occurred on October 19, 1989.
22. Phenomenally cool record low maximum temperatures continued to be set in Central and South Texas on October 9, 2000 for the third day in row. The temperature at Del Rio, TX only reached a maximum of 44 degrees F, breaking the previous lowest maximum for the date of 70 degrees F set in 1970; thus breaking the daily record by 26 degrees! (This was also 40 degrees below the normal daily maximum temperature for the date.) It also set a new record for the coldest low maximum of record for any calendar day in October for Del Rio. Similarly, the temperature at Brownsville, TX only reached 50 degrees F, breaking the previous lowest maximum for the date of 68 degrees set in 1994. It also set a new record for the coldest low maximum temperature of record for any calendar day in October, breaking the previous lowest maximum temperature for the month of 52 degrees F set on October 30, 1925.
23. At other locations, the temperature at San Antonio only reached 46 degrees F, breaking the previous coolest maximum for this date of 70 degrees F, set in 1900. At Corpus Christi the afternoon high temperature only reached 47 degrees F establishing a new daily record low maximum, the previous maximum being 65 degrees F in 1900. At Midland, TX the maximum temperature also reached 47 degrees establishing a new record low maximum, breaking the old record of 50 degrees set in 1945. At Austin Bergstrom the temperature reached 51 degrees F, breaking the previous coolest maximum record for this date of 68 degrees F set in 1970.
24. Record cool daily maximum temperatures for October 9, 2000 were set at over a dozen stations locations in the eastern and southern U.S. These readings ranged from 43 degrees F at Boston, MA to 75 degrees F at Fort Myers, FL.
25. As the arctic air continued its push to the southeast, several daily record low temperatures for October 9, 2000 were established just before midnight. The 31 degrees at Charlotte, NC was the earliest a feeezing temperature had ever been observed at Charlotte since record keeping began in 1878. The previous earliest freeze was 32 degrees F on October 11, 1906.
26. New daily minimum temperature records were set in the Midwest and South on October 10, 2000. These ranged from 23 degrees F at Gilbert to 54 degrees F at Daytona Beach, FL.
27. The temperature fell to 31 degrees F at El Dorado, AR and to 32 degrees F at Longview, TX on October 10, 2000. This was the earliest freeze on record for both of these locations.
28. The temperature at Fort Myers, FL fell to 54 degrees on October 10, 2000. This not only established a new daily minimum temperature record for the date, but also was the coldest for so early in the season.
29. Record cool daily maximum temperatures continued in Texas and New Mexico on October 10, 2000. For the third day in a row, some of the coldest readings were in South Texas. Among the new records were 48 degrees F at Del Rio, TX; 52 degrees F at Brownsville, TX: 53 degrees F at Albuquerque, NM; 57 degrees F at San Antonio and Midland, TX; 58 degrees F at Austin Bergstrom; 59 degrees F at Corpus Christi, TX; and 64 degrees F at Houston, TX.
30. Record cold daily minimum temperatures were confined to the South on October 11, 2000. Some of the daily records were ranged from 26 degrees F at Bristol Tri-Cities, TN to 39 degrees F at Charleston, SC.
31. The temperature plunged to 29 degrees F at Charlotte, NC on October 11, 2000. This broke the previous record low of 32 degrees for the date set in 1906 and set a new record for the coldest reading so early in the season.
32. The temperature at Augusta, GA fell to 33 degrees F on October 11, 2000. This set a new daily record for the day, breaking the old record of 36 degrees set previously in 1906. This was the third consecutive day that had set a new miniumum temperature record. Records in Augusta have been maintained since 1873.
33. The temperature at Pine Bluff, AR fell to 32 degrees F on October 11, 2000, This set a new daily record for the day and was the earliest freeze on record. The previous earliest freeze for Pine Bluff was October 19, 1903.
34. Record cool maximum temperatures on October 11, 2000 continued in many areas of Texas for the fifth day in a row. Some of the new record cool maximum temperatures were 60 degrees F at Del Rio, TX; 65 degrees F at San Antonio, TX; and 66 degrees F at Austin Bergstrom, TX.
35. New record low minimum temperatures on October 12, 2000 continued in parts of the Southeast. Records ranged from 29 degrees F at Bristol Tri-Cities to 40 degrees F at Savannah, GA.
36. On October 25th, 2000 the minimum temperature only fell to 60 F in Rochester, MN. This broke the old record warm minimum of 54 set in 1989 but also was the warmest minimum temperature for so late in the year. The old record was set back on October 23rd, 1975.
37. On October 25th, 2000 the minimum temperature was a warm 62 F at the Minneapolis International Airport, MN. This broke the old record of 56 set in 1897 but also marked the third day in a row that a record warm minimum temperature was set.
38. On October 26th, 2000 the minimum temperature only fell to 61 F in La Crosse, WI.. This broke the old record warm minimum of 59 set in 1989 but also was the warmest minimum temperature for so late in the year. The old record was set back on October 24th, 1899.
1. As of October 31th, the Greenville-Spartanburg NWSO, SC has recorded 36 consecutive days with no measurable rainfall. A NWS office has existed in the Greenville-Spartanburg metro area since 1918. The previous record with no measurable rainfall was in 1952 from October 11th until November 9th. The last day of measurable rain at the weather office was on September 25th when 0.39 inches fell. The driest October was recorded by a cooperative observer in Greenville, SC before the NWS office was built in the area. The record was in October 1904 when only a trace was recorded. The entire month of October was rainfree at the NWS site and is a new monthly and all time record.
2. Precipitation recorded during October 2000 at Charlotte, NC was a trace of precipitation. This ties for the driest October in Charlotte when in 1953 only a trace of rainfall was recorded. Records date back to 1878. This October, a trace of rain was recorded on both the 17th and 18th of the month. The longest period without any measurable rain was a 40 day stretch in 1886 from September 16th until October 26th. The last measurable rain in Charlotte, NC was on September 25th.
3. The Asheville airport, NC also has had no rain since September 25th, 2000. The previous driest October on record for the airport since the office opened in 1964 was when 0.19 inches fell in 1991. Prior to September 1964, the NWSO was in downtown Asheville which opened in 1902. The driest October at the downtown office was in 1963 when only a trace of rain was recorded. Before 1963, the driest October downtown was in 1904 when 0.02 inches fell. As of the end of October, the airport location recorded no rain which is a new October and all time monthly record. The downtown station recorded a trace of rain which tied the October 1963 record.
4. The Boise, ID airport location recorded 2.59 inches of rain during October, 2000. This broke the previous October monthly record of 2.25 inches set in 1956, records for the station date back to 1864.
5. As of October 30th, 2000 the Phoenix Sky Harbor AP, AZ recorded the monthly total rainfall of 3.17 inches making it the second wettest October on record. The wettest October was back in 1972 when 4.40 inches of rain fell and was aided by the remnants of tropical storm Joanne. October 1972 was also the first documented time that a tropical storm moved into Arizona with its' tropical circulation still intact.
6. As of October 29th, 2000 Monterey, CA set a new record for the most rain during the month of October. The monthly total so far was 4.19 inches, this breaks the old October record of 2.31 inches set in 1982.
7. As of October 29th, 2000 Salinas, CA set a new record for the most rain during the month of October. The monthly total so far was 2.31 inches, this breaks the old October record of 2.16 inches set in 1982.
8. October 2000 was the driest month on record for the Raleigh, NC area. The trace amount of precipitation is a new driest month record breaking the old record of 0.06 inches of rain set back in November of 1890 amd 1931. The previous driest October was in 1907 when 0.22 inches of rain fell. As of October 31st, 2000 the Raleigh Durham International Airport, NC broke the record for most consecutive days without measurable rainfall at 35 days. The last day that measurable precipitation fell was on September 26th, 2000. The previous record of 32 consecutive days was from November 23rd to December 24th, 1965. Measurable precipitation is defined as any precipitation greater than or equal to 0.01 inch.
9. The rainfall for October 2000 at the Tucson International Airport, AZ was 4.98 inches. This tied the record monthly rainfall record for October set back in 1983.
10. Five storms during October 2000 produced widespread rainfall across southeast Arizona. A few stations tied or set new monthly and all time record precipitation amounts.

11. October 2000 was the driest month ever recorded at Roanoke, Lynchburg and Blacksburg, all in Virginia. Roanoke, VA observed only 0.02 inches or rain in October 2000. The previous all time driest month was 0.04 inches of rain set in October 1991. Records for the station began in 1912.
12. Lynchburg, VA observed only 0.01 inches or rain in October 2000. The previous all time driest month was 0.02 inches of rain set in September 1978. Records for the station began in 1872.
13. Blacksburg, VA observed only 0.02 inches or rain in October 2000. The previous all time driest month was 0.12 inches of rain set in October 1963. Records for the station began in 1941.
14. The NWSO in Blacksburg, VA also has a network or cooperative observers who provide rainfall statistics to the office. The following stations have reported no measurable precipitation duirng October 2000.

The office also monitors 150 automated rainfall gages located within their service area. These gages report whenever one millimeter (0.038 inches of rain). 99 of the 150 gages (66%) remained silent during the month and reported no precipitation.
14. Bristol (Tri-Cities Regional Airport), TN observed only 0.02 inches of rain in October 2000. The previous all time driest month was during October 1963 when only 0.07 inches of rain was reported. October 2000 was not only the driest October but also the all-time driest month on record as well.
15. Knoxville (McGhee-Tyson Airport), TN observed only a trace of rain during October 2000. The trace amount observed tied the driest month of October and the all time driest month at the station of October of 1963 when also a trace of rainfall was recorded. A trace of precipitation is too small to measure and is less than 0.005 inches.
16. Charleston (International Airport) , SC sets a new October 2000 precipitation record with only a trace (T) of rain during October 2000. This was the driest October at the station, the previous dry October was in 1942 when 0.01 of an inch of precipitation fell. This is also a record for the driest month ever, two previous months have recorded 0.01 of an inch back in October 1942 and April 1972. Also, no measurable rain fell from September 24th through November 3rd, 2000 for a total of 41 consecutive dry days. This is the second longest stretch of dry days, the record is 42 days from October 6th through November 16th, 1942. Weather records began at the station in Decmeber 1931.
17. Savannah, GA reported only a trace (T) of rain during October 2000. The lack of rainfall set a new record at the station. This was the driest October at the station, the previous dry October was in 1963 when 0.02 of an inch of precipitation fell. This also ties the record for the driest month ever, a trace (T) of rain was also recorded in December 1889. Also, no measurable rain fell from September 25th through November 4rd, 2000 for a total of 41 consecutive dry days.
