New Data Analysis Shows Possible Link between Childhood Obesity and Allergies
05/08/2009 -- A new study indicates there may be yet another reason to reduce childhood obesity — it may help prevent allergies. The study published in the May issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology showed that obese children and adolescents are at increased risk of having some kind of allergy, especially to a food. read more

Brain Anatomy Could Point to Autism
05/08/2009 -- Autistic toddlers seem more likely to have an enlarged amygdala, a brain area linked with facial recognition and emotions, University of North Carolina researchers report. "This study adds clarification to a potential fundamental brain mechanism underlying social deficits in autism. It provides potential insights into how this behavior develops," said lead researcher Dr. Joseph Piven, a professor of psychiatry. "Understanding the pattern of very early brain changes in autism and their relationship to particular behaviors could lead to enhanced early detection and could direct us to early interventions for these brain and behavior changes," Piven said. read more

The Brave Kids Story


Brave Kids was founded on June 9, 1999, by Kristen Fitzgerald , after the loss of her two children to catastrophic illnesses. Our mission is to help children with chronic, life-threatening illnesses and disabilities by connecting them to desperately needed health services and resources such as financial assistance, camps, support groups, child care, dental assistance, transportation and physical therapy.

The Brave Kids program has been approved by and is linked to over 110 health organizations such as: The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, The National Brain Tumor Foundation, the National Pediatric AIDS Foundation, United Cerebral Palsy, and the National Children's Cancer Society. read more

Dalai Lama and Kristen Fitzgerald of Brave Kids His Holiness the Dalai Lama honored Brave Kids Founder and President, Kristen Fitzgerald for her compassionate work helping children with special needs at a special Unsung Heroes of Compassion presentation.

Kristen received a special acknowledgement for her work with Brave Kids from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
