How to access historical water-quality data in your watershed

 

Start at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ (this link opens in a new window).


Step 1

arrowClick on the blue Water quality button.

arrowChoose your state or territory under Geographic Area (in the upper right-hand corner of the page).

arrowClick Samples.

Step 4

arrowSelect Hydrologic Unit in the first column and Site type in the third column. Submit.

Step 5

arrowSelect your Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC). What is a HUC? Select Surface Water under Site type. Then scroll down to Retrieve Water quality samples for Selected Sites and select Inventory of Water-Quality data. Click Submit.

arrowYou may need to scroll down the page to locate all the stations with water-quality data in your watershed. For each station, click on Inventory of water-quality data with retrieval under Output Formats. You will get a table like the one below that shows what kind of water-quality data are available from this station, how many samples were collected, and when.

Step 7

arrowSelect the box(es) next to the data you want.


Step 8

arrowScroll down the page, enter a range of dates to restrict the amount of data [optional], and click Submit.
