DR. FRANCO EINAUDI ELECTED FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY

Dr. Franco Einaudi has been elected a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for his outstanding contributions to atmospheric sciences.

Einaudi was honored as a fellow on Wednesday, January 13, 1999 at the 79th AMS Annual Meeting in Dallas. The AMS, founded in 1919, promotes the development and dissemination of information on the atmospheric and related sciences and publishes nine academic journals devoted to these topics.

A native of Turin, Italy, Einaudi received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering with specialization in plasma physics and atmospheric sciences at Cornell University. He has been the Chief of the Laboratory for Atmospheres at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., since 1990, and served as the Head of the Severe Storms Branch of the Laboratory for the previous three years.

Prior to joining NASA, Dr. Einaudi's experiences include two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the Physics Department of the University of Toronto, ten years with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences of the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, and seven and a half years at the Georgia Institute of Technology as Professor of Geophysical Sciences.

The scientist is the author of 50 publications in the area of atmospheric dynamics. He is recognized by his peers, both nationally and internationally, for his work on gravity waves, gravity waves/turbulence interaction, propagation of gravity waves in a moist atmosphere, and the role of gravity waves in initiating and interacting with storms.

Einaudi has served on numerous committees and panels and is a member of the American Geophysical Union and a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.

Einaudi and his wife, Paula, live in Columbia, MD. They have two sons.
