Title: Mobility of Fecal Indicator Microoganisms within an Karst Groundwater Basin in the Inner Bluegrass Region, Kentucky
Project Type: Research
Start Date: 03/01/2006
End Date: 02/28/2007
Congressional District: KY 6th
Focus Categories: Groundwater, Water Quality, Methods
Keywords: karst aquifer, latex microspheres, groundwater tracers

Abstract: The proposed research will assess the mobility of microorganisms within a karst basin for the purpose of improving groundwater quality. A series of groundwater traces using solute tracers (conservative ions and fluorescent dyes), latex microspheres and isotopically tagged bacteria is planned to examine the mobility of microorganisms under different flow regimes within the karst system. Supplemental funding requested through this proposal for the addition of microsphere tracers will significantly enhance an existing project supported by a UK College of Agriculture SB-271 grant.
