Regional geology

New Waddell Dam and reservoir are on the southern boundary of the Transition Zone between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range physiographic provinces. Regional topography is comprised of mesas and ragged to rounded hills separated by deep alluvium-filled basins.
