Opportunity Description: Volunteer Internships-Environmental Education & Interpretation- ATTENTION COLLEGE STUDENTS: If you enjoy working with people, love the outdoors, and want to spend your summer at beautiful Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake, then this may be the perfect opportunity for you! Number of Positions: Three volunteer internships are available, dates flexible May – Aug 09 Location: John H Kerr Reservoir, Boydton VA. The John H. Kerr Reservoir is a 50,000 acre lake located on the Roanoke River on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Park Rangers for the Army Corps of Engineers operate numerous campgrounds, picnic areas, hiking trails and boat ramp facilities. The Corps also operates the Joseph S.J. Tanner Environmental Education Center, a popular field trip destination for school, youth, and church groups. The center is also opened throughout the summer for use by the general public. Description: Work within the Tanner Environmental Education Center under the supervision of a Park Ranger. Greet guests, answer questions about local flora and fauna. Conduct and assist with environmental interpretive programs. Programs include school field trips, classroom presentations, weekend events, and campground interpretive programs. All programs will highlight local ecosystems, wildlife, natural / cultural history, and natural resource issues. Assist in caring for live reptile and non-venomous snake displays. Work hours and days will vary; hours per week = 40. Qualifications: Interested individuals should enjoy meeting and working with a variety of people of all ages. A background or interest in conservation, ecology, education, parks and recreation, or the natural resources is required. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing a degree in a natural resources, education, or recreation field. Must be at least 18 years of age and posses a valid driver’s license.
