James M. Bowling

 

James M. Bowling, 86, of Cross Lanes passed away peacefully Monday, May 11, 2009, at home.

James was retired from Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass with 35 years of service and was a member of the glasscutters union. He was an avid guitar player and played with the Liberty Mountaineers. He was a member of the Horseshoe Pitchers of America and enjoyed bowling. An Army veteran of WWII, he was in the second wave of the invasion of Normandy on D-Day.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rebecca M. Bowling.

James is survived by his son, Stuart Bowling and wife, Tammie, of Cross Lanes; daughter, Kathy Westfall and husband, Ed, of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Zachary D. Bowling, James Eric Westfall and Kristopher Westfall; and great-grandchildren, Landon, Ethan, and Grayson. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Gilbert Fisher; and his niece, Roanna Smith, both of Marietta, Ga.

The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers, Nora, Tressie and Gayla.

A celebration of James' life will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 14, in the chapel of Tyler Mountain Funeral Home and Memory Gardens. Burial with military rites will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes.

Ruth Lee Byers

 

Ruth Lee Byers, 84, of Moneta, Va., passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va.

Born November 13, 1924, in Richwood, she was a daughter of the late Alexander M. and Ollie D. Stinnet Caldwell. She was preceded in death by one son, Jack Byers.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richwood. She was a homemaker and lived with her daughter, Carolyn R. Cole, since 2006.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Ray Byers; two daughters, Carolyn R. Cole of Moneta, Va., and Frances of Richmond, Va.; and a granddaughter, Ann in Ohio.

Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Monday, May 11, in West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin, with the Rev. Dana Gatewood officiating. Interment followed under the direction of the White Funeral Home.

Ronald Gene Chaffin

 

Ronald Gene Chaffin, 75, of St. Albans passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, after an extended illness.

Born August 19, 1933, in Wharton, he was a son of the late Joel and Luemma Chaffin and was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.

Ron was a retired general manager for Joe Holland Chevrolet, South Charleston, with 32 years of service. He graduated from Morris Harvey College in 1956 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army “Fighting Finance Corps,” achieving the rank of first lieutenant. Ron was an avid hunter, gardener, and loved the great outdoors. He was also a deacon and elder in the Church of Christ, most recently a member of King's Way Christian Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sandra; his sons and their wives, Joseph and Victoria of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Michael and Traci of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren, his “pride and joy”, Pierce, Noah, Lily, and Jack; mother-in-law, Louise Severeno; special niece, Kathy Ashworth, along with husband, Bill, and grandnephew, Keegan; and special nephew Larry Jones.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Paul Ronk and Gene Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Erna Lue Cunningham

 

Erna Lue Theresa “Terry” Cunningham, 76, of Cocoa, Fla., died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 10, 2009.

Mrs. Cunningham was born in Walton, W.Va. After traveling the world as a military wife and mother, she settled down in Brevard County in 1968 after her now deceased husband, Milford “Bill” Cunningham retired from the U.S. Army.

Survivors include her three sons, Thomas A. (Kandy) Cunningham of Port St. John, Fla., Chadwick F. (Kelly) Cunningham of Merritt, Fla., and Steven A. (Kim) Cunningham of Palm Bay, Fla.; one daughter, Kelly Witt of Walton, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by funeral services Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home, Cocoa, Fla., with the Rev. William Jones officiating. Entombment will follow in Brevard Memorial Park.

Ruth P. Hadden

 

Ruth P. Hadden, 90, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, April 24, 2009.

Ruth was a native of Sicily Island, La., and resided in Gulf Breeze for the past seven years, where she attended St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church.

Ruth was always strong in her faith and was actively involved in several church communities - Trinity Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge, La., St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Franklin, Tenn.; St. John's Episcopal Church in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. and St. Francis of Assisi in Gulf Breeze.

An avid walker, Ruth was well known in her previous hometown of Harper's Ferry, W.Va., where she and husband Stan resided for more than 25 years. Together, they ran an antique shop, The Red Bull Antiques, from their home. Ruth was always ready with a pot of coffee and some sweets and enjoyed chatting with the shop's visitors.

Ruth was also an artist, creating beautiful hand-stitched quilts, afghans, wool rugs, sweaters, hats, doll clothes, her and her children's and grandchildren's clothing, sweet clown dolls, table cloths, alter linens and clerical vestments for her clergy, and ceramics and refinished furniture, which have become cherished family heirlooms. Her eggcup collection numbered over 500.

Preceding Ruth in death were her son, Timothy Delano Hadden; her husband of 67 years, Stanley E. Hadden; her daughter-in-law, Marlene Troxclair Hadden, wife of Stan II; and three brothers, Dexter, J.C., and Joe Warren Patterson.

Survivors include daughter, Patricia H. Woodburn of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; son, Stanley E. Hadden II of Corrigan, Texas (Pam); four grandchildren, Lisa A. Salom (Jaime), John P. Woodburn, Susan G. Kacachos (James), and Kim A. Schwager (Robert); seven great-grandchildren, Justin, Katherine, Madalyn, Michael, Jordan, Sydney and Abigail; two sisters, Lela Patterson and Louise Walker, and one brother Ollie Patterson.

Inurnment will be at Port Hudson, La., a Civil War battlefield and national cemetery, on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, 2 p.m. A luncheon will follow.

Marjorie Lou Haymaker, 65, of Bluefield died May 9, 2009, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 19, 1944, in Roane County, she was a daughter of the late Cleo and Gatha Hill Berry.

She was a schoolteacher in Kanawha County for over 30 years. She previously attended Walton Union Church, Walton, and later attended Westminster Presbyterian Church, Bluefield.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Haymaker; one daughter, Melanie Haymaker of Bluefield; one son, Brian T. Haymaker of Bellingham, Wash.; one sister, Carolyn Scott of Bluefield; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at Walton Union Church with the Rev. Howard Finkel officiating. Burial will be in Haymaker Cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer.

She was born Oct. 9, 1959, in Huntington, a daughter of Winford and Fredith Adkins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond James Hidalgo.

She was an employee of the United States Postal Service.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sons, Christopher and Brandon; five brothers, Ancel, Michael, Randel, Winford Jr. and Mathias; one sister, Billie Jean Robinson; and stepsons, Eric, Mike, Darren and Ryan.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin.

Georgia Ellen Jackson, 75, of Craigsville, Nicholas County, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009, at her home in Craigsville, with her family at her side.

Born January 12, 1934, in Marcus, Webster County, she was a daughter of the late Roy Junior and Esta (Miller) Mathes. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret Hall and Rita Perrine; one grandson, Paul D. Perrine; four sisters and two brothers.

She loved quilting, gardening, canning, and she loved her “frogs.”

Survivors include her husband, Frank Jackson, whom she married on January 20, 1990; her children, Rodney Phillips and wife, Sandra, of North Carolina, Lester Blake of Webster Springs, Linda Sparks and husband, Steve, of Webster Springs, Esta “Dale” Carpenter of Glade View, and Tracy Beckner and husband, Ronnie, of Richwood; brothers, Kenneth Mathes of Glade View and Steve Mathes and Sue of Tiffin, Ohio; sisters, Shirley Smith of North Carolina, Charlotte Fowler and husband, Lee, of Boggs, and Sherry Carpenter and husband, Junior, of Paden City; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces; stepchildren, Georgia Mae Conaway and husband, Rick, of Craigsville, Addie “Tubby” Williams and husband, Joe, of Fenwick, Sammy Jackson and Robin of Bradenton, Fla., and Tommy Jackson of Bradenton; 10 stepgrandchildren, 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the White Funeral Home, Craigsville, with the Rev. Roy Sims officiating. Burial will follow in West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin.

Darrell Ray Jividen, 58, of Falls Creek, Pa. formerly of Hometown, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009, following a sudden illness.

He was a retired glassblower, employed by Jerome Glass of Punxsutawney, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hansel and Bessie (Siders) Jividen; his wife, Cheryl A. Jividen; and a sister, Erma Gail Wagner.

Survivors include daughters, Cathryn (Steve) Thompson of Tampa, Fla., and Megan (Joe) Lively of Hurricane; stepsons, Don Busatto, Tom Busatto and Joe Busatto; sister, Janet Tucker of Hometown; brothers, Gerald (Freda) Jividen of New Brunswick, Canada, Terry (Charlotte) Jividen of St. George, Tucker County, and Thomas (Pamela) Jividen of Hometown; grandchildren, Clayton Thompson and Summer Lively; three stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Ilene Frances Johnson

 

Ilene Frances (Miller) Johnson, 68, of Hurricane passed from her Earthly life on May 11, 2009, after a gallant fight against diabetes and end-stage renal disease.

She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, born in Hurricane, on August 7, 1940.

Ilene was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Teays Valley. She was a Christian for over 50 years. She taught children's Sunday school for many years. She was a former Hostess Committee chairwoman at the First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She was a Cub Scout den mother. She baby-sat several children in the Hurricane area.

Ilene was a quiet, humble, kind, caring and compassionate lady, who chose to be supportive from behind the scene, rather than in the limelight.

Ilene was a lover of gospel music. She was a great cook and an outstanding homemaker who was very loving and supportive, both as a wife and a mother.

She was preceded in death by her first-born son, Tracy; her parents, Willie and Ellen Miller; and one sister, Linda Sowards.

Ilene is survived by her husband of 47 years, Dorsey Johnson; her son, Rodney Johnson and his wife, Melissa, of Hurricane, and two grandsons; Trace and Alex Johnson of Hurricane, whom she loved very dearly.

She is also survived by four sisters, Nora Patterson and her husband, Earl, of Brandon, Florida; Ruth Rice and her husband, Charlie, of Cannonburg, Ky., Norma Clark and her husband, Raymond, and Rosalea Christian, all of Hurricane; two brothers; Charles Miller and his wife, Brenda, of London, Ky., and Dewey Miller and his wife, Betty, of South Charleston.

There will be a funeral service held in celebration of her life at Calvary Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 13 at 11 a.m. Presiding over the service will be Pastor Mark Pyles, Pastor Millard Mitchell, and Pastor Jeff Hurst. Burial will follow in Valley View Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist, 3653 Teays Valley Road.

Liam Samuel Lord, newborn son of Erica and Jason Lord, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2009, surrounded by his loving parents.

Liam, born on April 22, 2009, touched many lives during his three weeks here on Earth.

Michael E. McCormick

 

Michael E. McCormick, 67, of Columbus, Ind., died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Hospice of South Central Indiana after an ongoing battle with lymphoma.

Calling hours for Mr. McCormick are scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike.

Family and friends are also invited to a celebration of life service at Westside Community Church, Wednesday, May 13, at 11 a.m., following graveside service in Garland Brook Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

Mike, lovingly known as “Garr,” was a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and dedicated community leader. He had a passion for youth sports, and any organization where he could contribute to the activities of his children and grandchildren. He was president of Richards Elementary School PTO, board president of the Foundation for Youth, president of the Columbus North Booster Club, a commissioner of the Indiana Youth Soccer Association, and assistant coach of the two-time state champion Columbus Express U10 and U12 boys soccer teams.

As a community leader, Mr. McCormick was an alumnus of Leadership Bartholomew County ('91-'92), a Rotarian, a member of the United Way Campaign Committee, and a volunteer with the Book Buddy program of the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation. He was a member of Westside Community Church and former member of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church in Columbus, where he served as elder and taught Sunday school.

Mr. McCormick graduated from West Virginia University in 1965 with a journalism degree. He married Judy McKim of Charleston, W.Va., in 1966, and they had two children, Carrie and Braden. He brought his family to the Columbus community in 1971, as advertising and sales manager for Fostoria Glass Company. He continued in sales management throughout his career with Arvin Industries, ATLM America, Management Recruiters Inc. and R&R Technologies, from which he retired in 2006.

He continued to serve the community during retirement as senior products marketing manager for the Bartholomew County Senior Center and manager of Senior Staffing in conjunction with Elwood Staffing Services Inc.

Mr. McCormick is survived by his wife, Judy McCormick of Columbus, Ind.; daughter, Carrie (Tom) Jackson of Nineveh, Ind.; son, Braden (Katie) McCormick of Bristol, Ind.; grandchildren, William, Elizabeth and Grace Jackson and Josephine and Evelyn McCormick; stepsister, Ramona E. (Howard) Campbell of Williamsburg, Va.; and cousin, Jerry (Sandra) Alderson of Charleston, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Braden E. and Edna Campbell McCormick, and stepfather, Sewell D. Hott.

Randall “Nic” William Nichols, 51, of Elkview went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 10, 2009, at his residence.

He was a district supervisor with Charleston Newspapers for 18 years and was a medical assistant with the Veterans Administration.

Randall graduated from Herbert Hoover High School and graduated with a medical assistant degree at Everest Institute College.

He was preceded in death by his stepsister, Diane L. White.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with Luke.

Surviving: are his loving wife, Lisa Kay Fullen Nichols; mother, Geneva M. (Nichols) Cole of Elkview; father, Ronald William Nichols of Summersville; son, Randall Nichols II of Elkview; stepdaughter, Amy LaDawn Nichols of Elkview; brother, Roger A Nichols of Elkview; and stepbrother, Kelly Cole of Clendenin.

Mr. Butch Pauley, 54, of Kanawha City went home to be with the Lord May 9, 2009, in CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Butch was a 28-year employee of the West Virginia Department of Highways Accounting Division and a member of Gateway Church in South Charleston. Butch loved his wife, his girls and his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf, going to ballgames and he loved God. In your life there are people who make you a better person for knowing them. Butch was this person for a lot of people.

He is survived by his wife, Karen L. Pauley; mother, Doris and stepfather, Lloyd Calvert; father, Bill Pauley; father and mother-in-law, Robert “Red” and Wilma Jones; daughters, Rita Pauley-Carpenter and husband Sam, Michelle L. La Master and husband John, Meredith L. Pauley, Morgan L. Pauley and Sara Kelley; grandparents, Willard and Belva Pauley; brothers, Harold Quigley, Billy Pauley, Phillip Calvert and Eric Calvert; brother-in-law, Bobby and wife Jane Jones; sister-in-law, Deborah Stoffel; and three grandchildren, Thad Pauley-Carpenter, Madison La Master and Kai Haley. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Colby Jones, Bobby Jones, Matthew Jones, Will Jones, Taylor Cummings, Tyler Pauley, Nick Calvert and Natalie Calvert.

A tribute to the life of Butch Pauley will be held at noon Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Harding Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ron McClung officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Howard Douglas Raines, 66, of Hurricane went home to the Lord and his loved ones who have gone on before.

He was a lifelong resident of Hurricane, a retiree of Union Carbide and served in the United States Army, where he served a tour in Vietnam and was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 9097 of Hurricane.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruby Jean.

He leaves behind a lifetime of memories to cherish to his son, Darrell Douglas of Hurricane; daughter, Carol Jean Chapman and her husband, Glen, and future grandson, Glen Andrew, all of Proctorville, Ohio; two dear sisters-in-law, Verna and Jewel Smith of Hurricane; brothers, Michael and his wife, Judy, of Hurricane, Dennis of Hurricane, Leonard and his wife, Peggy, of St. Augustine, Fla., and John and his wife, Rosemary; a sister, Jolene Boggess and her husband, Richard, of Madison; and a special friend, Gloria Nicholas of St. Albans.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and all of those he has left behind.

Delbert “Jim” Eugene Seabolt, 70, of Ripley, formerly of Walton, departed this life on May 8, 2009, at McLeod Hospital in Florence, S.C., after a short illness.

He was a retiree of Pennzoil Products and a member of the Teamsters Union Local 175.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alma (Garrett) Seabolt; brother, Charles Seabolt; and sisters, Mary “Pat” Rucker and Elenor Cadle.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruby Seabolt; son, Steven Seabolt and wife, Denise, of Ripley; daughter, Terri Marks and husband, Danny, of Walton; grandchildren, Danny “Buck” Marks and Whitney Casto of Spencer, Danikka Wolfe and husband, Franklin, of Walton, Jeanna Marks of Walton, and Logan Seabolt, Chase Seabolt, Emily Lane and husband, Derek, Erin Ash, Ellie, Ash all of Ripley; sisters, Evalean “Pete” Seabolt of Elkview, Dreama Rucker and husband, Charles, of Elkview, Carolyn Thomas and husband, Darrel, of Franklin, N.C., and Joyce Halstead and husband, Fred, of Eleanor; and brother, Ricky Seabolt and wife, Pam, of St. Albans.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Burial will be in Paxton Cemetery, Walton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ernest R. Tribble

 

Ernest R. “Ernie” Tribble, 71, of Charleston passed away at Hubbard Hospice House on Saturday, May 9, 2009, after a long illness.

He was a longtime resident of Charleston. After living in Florida for some time, he made West Virginia his home. Ernie worked as the assistant to the funeral director, Leonard Johnson, in Marmet and drove ambulances from the 1950s to 1970s. His latest position was working as a funeral attendant for Barlow-Bonsall and Leonard Johnson Funeral Homes. He also worked temporarily in the auto industry, buying and selling vehicles.

He is survived by his son, Mark Alan Tribble; three grandchildren; and a special friend, Margaret Hodges.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. Rymer Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Marmet Cemetery, Marmet.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Roscoe Franklin Tucker

 

Roscoe Franklin Tucker, 76, of Campbells Creek died May 10, 2009, at CAMC General Hospital after a short illness.

Mr. Tucker was retired from the West Virginia Education Association after 32 years of service. He was also a retired private detective for 10 years and retired from the Prosecuting Attorney's office for three years as a detective.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Della Proctor Tucker. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Maywood, Carmel, Audel, Beryl, Clifford and R.W. Tucker.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Martin Tucker of Campbells Creek; sons, Danny, Anthony and David (Frances) Tucker, all of Orlando, Fla., and Bruce and Robert Tucker, both of Campbells Creek; daughters, Linda (Curt) Garnsay of Loudon, Tenn., and Melony (Richie) Cox of Kissimmee, Fla.; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Dee (Sandy) of Campbells Creek; sisters, Sarah (Eddie) King of Campbells Creek and Isabelle Allman of Charleston; and many, many loved ones.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Salvation Army Citadel, 301 Mary St., Charleston.
