2008 Secretary's Project Management Awards
Secretary’s Award of Excellence
The Office of Science’s Molecular Foundry Project. For demonstrating exceptional results in completing a project within cost and schedule. The project was executed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and constitutes a custom-designed user facility for state-of-the-art research at the nanoscale. The $85 million project included 95,000 gross square feet of construction and an initial complement of advanced technical equipment. The construction savings on the building made it possible to release $1.4 million in building construction contingency funds to procure additional scientific equipment. The facility has won numerous honors and acclaim for architecture and sustainability, including a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design “Gold” Certificate and is the first building of any type to be so recognized in the City of Berkeley.
Secretary’s Award of Achievement
The Office of Science’s Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) Project. For demonstrating significant results in completing a project within cost and schedule. The $75.8 million CINT project was carried out as a partnership between Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory to design and build a major scientific user facility for nanoscience and nanotechnology. The CINT project team was responsible for expertly managing all efforts on the construction of two facilities at geographically different locations. The project successfully employed the use of video teleconferencing to remain fully cognizant of project challenges. The Core Facility at Sandia National Laboratory achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design “Silver” Certificate and was selected by Southwest Contractor Magazine as a New Mexico Best of 2007, Public Green Building Project.
