In July 2006, Texas received a $1.5 million two-year award from the U.S. Department of Labor to join the ongoing DOL-SSA Disability Program Navigator Initiative (PDF). The national initiative includes 45 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
In Texas, fourteen Workforce Boards joined with the Texas Workforce Commission to implement the Texas Disability Navigator Initiative. The project funds one full-time position in each of the participating workforce areas, a Disability Navigator. The initiative provides an opportunity to establish a specialized position within the local workforce area to facilitate staff growth and system development.
