Explore Two Great Battles of the American Civil War

In the summer of 1861, enthusiastic volunteers in colorful uniforms gathered to fight the first major land battle of the war. Confident that their foes would turn and run, neither side anticipated the smoke, din and death of battle. Nearly one year later, both sides met again on the same battlefield with the Confederates winning a solid victory bringing them to the height of their power.

Climate

Summers are hot and humid; winters can be cold with high winds. Precipitation is variable year-round with occasional snowfall. Good walking shoes and layered clothing are recommended when visiting the park or hiking the trails.

Did You Know?
Capt. James Ricketts was wounded and captured while commanding a Union battery at First Manassas. His wife Fannie found him at a field hospital, and accompanied her husband to a Richmond prison to nurse him back to health. Ricketts survived and ended the war a Major General.
