FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Gerald M. Fitzpatrick--P894219
201 W. Manville Street 800-421-1936 Made in USA - Policy Comment August 5, 1997 Office of the Secretary RE: Comments of Merit Abrasive Products, Inc. Dear Sir/Madam: Merit Abrasive hereby responds to the Federal Trade Commission's request for comments on its proposed Guides for the use of U.S. Origin Claims. Merit Abrasive manufactures and distributes abrasive tools primarily through distributors located in the United States. The company employs about 160 people in the Compton California manufacturing facility. Due to the competitive nature of the business, and the presence of foreign-made goods in the marketplace, Merit owes part of its success to the claim that many of its products are "Made in USA". Because of this, we strongly oppose the FTC's proposal to weaken the standard for "Made in USA" claims from all or virtually all US content to substantially all US content. Weakening the standard will lead to consumer deception and hurt our current marketing advantage. Respectfully submitted, Gerald M. FitzpatrickGerald M.
