AFL Care Demonstration Projects

Introduction

There are currently 31 AFL care demonstration programs funded in their second, third, and fourth years of implementation. All Care programs are innovative examples of effective and appropriate partnerships between community organizations and the Federal government. Most projects have developed components that reach out to fathers as well as teen mothers, encouraging and teaching them to play vital roles in their children's lives. These programs build on what is already known about preventing unhealthy risk behaviors and sexually transmitted diseases. They also enhance good parenting skills and help to reduce child abuse and neglect. All of these Care projects include a rigorous evaluation component to identify best practices for this population.

OAPP also supports 35 prevention demonstration projects that provide and evaluate prevention services to children and teens. In addition to the use of curricula and approved educational materials, most care and prevention projects use holistic approaches, placing considerable emphasis on helping youth develop their assets and focus on building lifelong skills for youth. The AFL grantees implement approaches that strengthen youth assets and address the developmental needs of the target population. The projects help youth develop a belief in a positive future and their ability to take actions that will achieve that future and avoid actions that will jeopardize it.
