When my wife’s wallet was stolen a number of years ago, the credit reporting agencies did not offer a credit freeze. They only noted a fraud alert on her record. Despite the fraud alert being in place with all three credit reporting agencies, identity thieves were able to open new lines of credit in her name with a large number of major retailers over the next several weeks. Only one retailer declined to open a new line of credit because of the fraud alert. The identity thieves were able to steal over $10,000 this way. A credit freeze would have prevented this, so we strongly support credit freeze laws.
