The United States Court System

The United States Courts System is divided into 12 Judicial Circuits (including the District of Columbia). The United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina is a part of the 4th Circuit. The Eastern District of North Carolina is comprised of six divisions with two offices, the headquarters in Wilson and a divisional office in Raleigh.

If the debtor's residence, principal place of business or principal assets have been located in one or more of these counties for the necessary period of time, the case should be filed in the Eastern District of North Carolina. The county determines the division.

Presently, there are a total of three judges sitting in the Eastern District. The Honorable Randy D. Doub, Chief Judge, with Chambers in Wilson, and the Honorable A. Thomas Small and the Honorable J. Rich Leonard, with chambers in Raleigh.
