OSTI raises $2,400 for Norwood, Dutch Valley, Andersonville, Briceville, and Fairview Elementary Schools

Oak Ridge, TN — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) raised $2,400 during its recent annual Adopt-A-School auction featuring auctioneer Bear Stevenson. The auction was held at Kern Methodist Church in Oak Ridge and benefits Norwood, Andersonville, Briceville, Dutch Valley, and Fairview Elementary Schools.

Supplies were delivered to the schools January 27, and included construction paper, markers, pencils, pens, staplers, paper clips, magic tape, video tape, post-it-notes, tissues, file folders, copy paper, and more. OSTI has been Adopt-a-School partner of Norwood Elementary School for 16 years, filling special requests for science equipment, transportation for field trips, judges and prizes for science essays, judges for science fairs, and more.

"The supplies we receive from OSTI help our school in so many ways," said Tom Braden, principal of Briceville Elementary School. "We do not have to rely on room fees and fundraisers as much, and teachers do not have to make as many out-of-pocket purchases when these supplies are made available to our students. This is such a generous show of support for our schools, our students, and teachers. We really appreciate it."

OSTI Director Walter Warnick said, "This is another example of our employees' dedication to advancing science knowledge. I appreciate their efforts and the area businesses who generously partnered with OSTI to benefit local school children."

OSTI employees donated homemade holiday treats and other items for the auction. Area businesses that donated items include: Apex Office Supply, Applebee's, Baneberry Golf Club, Dollywood, Epicurean Foods, Jameson Inn, Knight's Florist, Knoxville Opera Co., M&W Auto Repair, Inc., Natures Marketplace, Oak Ridge Country Club, Panera Bread, Proffitt's, Red Lobster, Ross the Boss, RT Clapp, Ruby Tuesday, Sagebrush Steakhouse, Soup Kitchen, University of Tennessee Cultural Attractions Committee, and Wal-Mart.

Bidders included OSTI federal employees as well as OSTI contractor employees from Information International Associates and NCI Information Systems, Inc.

A part of the Oak Ridge community since 1947, OSTI's purpose is to ensure DOE research results are available and accessible to the American public. OSTI, a program within the DOE Office of Science, has a federal staff of approximately 60 in Oak Ridge. The program's headquarters is in Washington, DC.
