Board Awards Grants For The 2nd Quarter
On April 24, 2009, the SJI Board of Directors met to award grants for the 2nd quarter of FY 2009. A total of $895,086 in new grants was awarded, including $500,000 in new Strategic Initiatives Grants (SIG) projects. continue >
U.S. Marshals Service and SJI Continue Working To Improve Judicial Security
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) and SJI recently finalized a second year Partner Grant to support a component of the USMS Judicial Security Fellowship Program. This program provides an opportunity for state and local law enforcement officers charged with court security to train with the USMS. This includes training on high level executive protection and court security operations. During the program, the Judicial Security Fellow (JSF) is exposed to all aspects of USMS judicial and court security, and travels to sites of ongoing high-threat trials and protective details. continue >
Immigration Issues In The State Courts: Key Improvements Are Being Implemented
As part of its on-going work in the Miami-Dade County Superior Court, the Maricopa County, Arizona, Superior Court, and the Courts of the Minnesota Eighth Judicial Circuit, The Center for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) has identified ten key improvements for better addressing the impacts of federal, state, and local immigration law, policy, and practice. continue >
State Court Budget Shortfalls
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, at least 44 states are facing shortfalls in their FY 2009 and/or FY 2010 budgets; a trend that is likely to continue into the future. In addition, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently reported to the Senate Finance Committee that, “the long-term fiscal challenges faced by state and local governments are exacerbated by the current recession. The magnitude of these challenges affects all levels of government.” The GAO goes on to conclude that its estimate of the budget shortfalls is consistent with those provided by the National Conference of State Legislatures, the National Governors Association, and the Urban Institute. continue >
