The refuge has a visitor contact station with a 40-seat auditorium that includes an indoor bird observation area. Teachers often times bring the students to view their choice of wildlife videos, walk trails, and participate in educational activities. "Discovery Boxes" are available for educatiors to borrow; subjects include Wetlands, Forests and Migratory Birds.
Nine public fishing areas are open throughout the refuge including a disabled accessible fishing pier at Pool K. Fish commonly caught include crappie, yellow perch, bluegill, large and smallmouth bass, and trout. Specific regulations and maps are available at the headquarters/visitor contact station and on the station website. Eleven small game species, ducks, geese and six other migratory bird species and three big game species are hunted during the various seasons that occur from September 1 through the end of February. The most popular include deer, turkey, rabbit, and waterfowl hunting. Specific regulations and maps are available at the headquarters/visitor contact station and on the station website. There are five nature trails ranging in length from one-half mile to three miles, one of which is ADA accessible. Other public use facilities include an auto driving route, a waterfowl and wildlife observation blind, an observation deck with spotting scopes and the Deer Run Overlook. The headquarters/visitor contact station is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors should call ahead to insure that the Visitor Contact Station is open. No entrance fees |
