Patents and Inventions
Division of Policy and Directives Management
A patent is a 20-year exclusive right to make, use, or sell an invention. An invention can be art, machinery, a manufactured item, design, or any new improvement which is patentable under the laws of the United States of America. 

Employees who develop inventions that contribute to the efficiency and/or economy of, or otherwise improve Government operations, may receive cash awards. They are also eligible to receive royalties not to exceed $150,000 per year unless the President approves a larger award. 

Employee Award Certification 

 If your application has successfully been sent to the US Patent and Trademark Office  (USPTO) and/or your invention has been approved for patenting by the USPTO, please have your supervisor fill out FWS Form 3-2207 (Award Certification).  For more information on how to fill out this form, read 402 FW 1 or please contact Phyllis Cook at (703) 358-2503 or email Phyllis_Cook@fws.gov

The Division of Policy and Directives Management: 

Develops, administers, and monitors the patents and inventions program. 
Ensures appropriate records and reports are maintained. 
Serves as liaison between the Service and the Office of the Solicitor.
