Notice Number: NOT-HL-05-113
Key Dates
Release Date: April 5, 2005
Response Date: June 17, 2005
The NHLBI is soliciting comments and ideas on how NHLBI-supported resources in genetics and genomics can be used to facilitate the research of investigators at minority-serving institutions.
Background
Investigators at some minority-serving institutions (MSIs) may not have adequate access or the appropriate research resources to use genetic and genomic technologies and applications in their research studies. NHLBI-supported resources in genetics and genomics (e.g., Programs in Genomic Applications, NHLBI Shared Microarray Facilities, NHLBI Clinical Proteomics Programs, etc.) have been developed to advance scientific discovery in health and disease by providing information and education, tools, and resources to link genes to biological function (see http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/resources/index.htm for more information). This information is freely available to the research community. While such information and resources are widely disseminated, they may not be as readily available to investigators at MSIs. Therefore, there is a need to promote genetic, genomic, and proteomic resources, as well as their application and availability, to investigators at MSIs.
Information Requested
The NHLBI seeks your help in identifying how to make genetic and genomic resources available to investigators at MSIs. Specifically, we are interested in understanding
(a) the needs and barriers to perform genetic, genomic, and proteomic research at MSIs and (b) how NHLBI can assist in meeting the needs and overcoming the barriers.
Your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions will be used to guide future NHLBI activities designed to expedite the use of genetic and genomic resources at MSIs and their application to biomedical research questions in an effort to improve public health. Respondents are asked to comment on one or more of the issues listed below, but should not feel compelled to address all of them.
The NHLBI would like your thoughts and comments on the following areas:
Do barriers exist in the use of genetic, genomic, and proteomic research resources and information (e.g., Programs in Genomic Applications, NHLBI Shared Microarray Facilities, NHLBI Clinical Proteomics Programs, etc.) by investigators at MSIs? If so, what are the barriers? What needs should be addressed?
How can these or other barriers in performing genetic, genomic, and proteomic research at MSIs be overcome?
