Special Note: The Butte Sink Wildlife Management Area (WMA) was established primarily to protect wintering habitat for waterfowl. Within this 18,000-acre management area, the FWS has purchased conservation easements on 10,254 acres from willing landowners to protect wildlife habitat. In exchange for payment, landowners agree to maintain wetlands and other habitats on their property in perpetuity. These WMA lands are privately owned and not open for public access. In addition, a 733-acre area (owned in fee title) was established beginning in 1980 to protect wetlands for wintering waterfowl. This area is known as the "Butte Sink WMA - Butte Sink Unit" and is closed to public access.
