Status Changes

Banders should not auxiliary-mark, transport, or treat a previously banded bird in such a manner that it will change the status of the bird even if the same bander originally banded the bird. When the status of previously banded birds must be altered to meet the needs of special circumstances (such as the transport of nuisance Canada Geese or the retention for rehabilitation of some birds), banders should contact the Bird Banding Offices for instructions on handling these birds.

About auxiliary marking

Transported Birds

Birds that are relocated from one 10-minute block to another must be reported as transported on the banding schedules. A transported bird is reported as status 2xx on the banding schedule. The transporting of birds requires a special use permit from the appropriate USFWS Migratory Bird Office.

Transported birds should always have the release location listed on the banding schedule. The source of the birds (capture location) can be listed in the remarks, but is not used as the banding location. Go to Status Codes
