Candidate Conservation Program
Candidate species are plants and animals for which the Service has sufficient information on their biological status and threats to propose them as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act, but development of a listing regulation is precluded by other higher priority listing activities.

Endangered Species Consultations
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service issues permits under various wildlife laws and treaties at different offices at the national, regional, and/or wildlife port levels. (We do not issue hunting and fishing licenses. Instead, those are issued in Florida by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.)

Listing Program
Through the Listing Program, the Service determines whether to add a species to the Federal list of endangered and threatened wildlife and plants. Once listed, a species is afforded the full range of protections available under the Endangered Species Act, including prohibitions on killing, harming or otherwise "taking" a species.

Recovery Program
The goal of the Recovery Program is to restore listed species as self-sustaining components of their ecosystems, and ultimately to remove them from the federal list of threatened and endangered species.

South Florida Multi-Species Recovery Plan
The Multi-Species Recovery Plan is, by design, a living document. It will be flexible to accommodate the changes identified through ongoing and planned research, and it will be compatible with adaptive management strategies. Multiple stakeholder particpation is cricitcal to ensure this process will continue.

Species Information
This page discusses Endangered and Threatened species in south Florida, and presents life history and legal information for each listed species regulated by the South Florida Ecological Services Field Office.

Species Lists by County
Shown to the right are lists of federally threatened and endangered species that occur in south Florida counties. These lists are intended for general informational use only. They do not replace the need for conducting on-site field work, and they do not meet the requirements for consultation under sections 7 or 10 of the Endangered Species Act.

Survey Protocols
The Fish and Wildlife Service, in consultation with the US Army Corps of Engineers, is developing procedures for improving coordination on projects that may affect listed species or critical habitats designated under the Endangered Species Act. This has resulted in the creation of Standard Local Operating Procedures for Endangered Species (SLOPES), which provide a stepwise process to assist Federal agencies, state and local governments, as well as individuals, in developing a determination as to the extent that a Federal action will affect federally listed species or critical habitats. SLOPES also identify options that may be available to avoid or minimize the effects of the action. From this process, modifications can be proposed, which, if implemented, will protect listed species from activities that otherwise could be harmful.
