Precendent-setting agreements between the Government of BC and the First Nations have resulted in a unique benefit sharing agreement that enables a forest carbon project to take place on government lands subject to unextinguished aboriginal rights and title. Reconciliation Protocols signed between the BC Government and the Coastal First Nations (an alliance of First Nations communities on British Columbia’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii) produce and share revenue from carbon credits generated on traditional First Nations territory.

The forest carbon offset project supports the development of a conservation economy and revenue from carbon offset sales are returned to the original stewards of this land. The revenue creates training and employment in a new, sustainable industry; it supports the communities and the cultures that originated here, and it acts as a model for a low carbon economy.
