Purpose
Sample late Pleistocene strata exposed along the crest
of an actively growing anticline within Santa Barbara Basin
to recover high-resolution records of global climate.
Summary
This primary purpose of the cruise was piston-coring
a late Pleistocene sedimentary section exposed across a breached anticline.
Bill Normark, Larry Kooker, and Ray Sliter of Coastal and Marine Geology
participated to provide Chirp sonar data in order to site the cores.
The USGS conducted chirp profiling during 4 of the 6 days on station,
with each session about 4 hours in length.
The cores, which were logged and described on board, will be shipped
to the core archive facility at Oregon State University.
Notes
The piston coring and chirp profiling operations
ceased 0800 on 08/26/05 offshore Santa Barbara;
all but nine of the scientific party were transferred ashore
by water taxi, including all USGS personnel.
The R/V Melville then transited to Seattle, WA
to officially end the leg on 08/30/05.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) identifies the cruise
as TUIM13MV ending in Seattle.
TUIM13MV is SI Oceanography's cruise ID
indicating leg 13 of Expedition TUIMV.
The expedition was an NSF-funded cruise
(C. Nicholson, J. Kennett, and C. Sorlien, UC Santa Barbara, co-PIs)
in collaboration with the USGS CMG Southern California
earthquake hazard task of the CABRILLO Project.
In the University of California Santa Barbara records,
the cruise is recorded as SBCORE.
