The Tonto National Forest, Arizona, embraces almost 3 million acres of rugged and spectacularly beautiful country, ranging from Saguaro cactus-studded desert to pine-forested mountains beneath the Mogollon Rim. This variety in vegetation and range in altitude (from 1,300 to 7,900 feet) offers outstanding recreational opportnunities throughout the year, whether it's lake beaches or cool pine forest.

As the fifth largest forest in the United States, the Tonto National Forest is one of the most-visited “urban” forests in the U.S. (approximately 5.8 million visitors annually). Its boundaries are Phoenix to the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian reservations to the east. more

 

Prescribed fires planned near Globe, Miami through end of year

Globe, Ariz. (May 5, 2009) -- Three prescribed fire projects will be conducted by Globe Ranger District fire management specialists on the Tonto National Forest, from May through the end of the year. The projects target approximately 6,000 acres north of Globe on Highway 60 in the Seven Mile Wash Area, 400 acres in Timber Camp/Carol Spring Mountains, and 20 acres of micsellaneous piles around Superior and Globe.

ADOT will close lanes, shift traffic on State Route 87 south of Payson

PAYSON, Ariz. (29 April 2009)– The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will close the southbound lanes of State Route (SR) 87 near Sunflower and shift traffic to one lane in each direction in the northbound lanes from May 4 to May 20.

(April 29, 2009) – Tonto National Forest officials announced today that they are re-issuing the Camp Creek recreation residences Environmental Assessment (EA) and are requesting public comment. The public comment period will begin Friday, May 1, and will end close of business (4:30 pm), Monday, June 1.

Signs to Remind Boaters of Mussel Threat

(April 16, 2009) - Stepping up the “Don’t Move a Mussel” campaign to limit the spread of invasive quagga mussels in Arizona’s waterways, Salt River Project is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Reclamation to place large signs at the chain of lakes on the Salt and Verde rivers to remind boaters to keep their mussel-infested vessels away.

Information needed to solve killing of 89 bats near Superstition Mountain

PHOENIX (April 15, 2009) - The Arizona Game and Fish Department is asking for the public’s help in solving a case involving the unlawful killing of nearly 90 bats in an abandoned mine near the Peralta Trailhead in the Superstition Mountains. The Mexican free-tail bats were shot and left in the mine to die sometime between April 1-10.

Tonto Basin, Ariz. (April 3, 2009) – The Tonto National Forest’s Pleasant Valley Ranger District needs reliable camp hosts from May through September. The Pleasant Valley Ranger District lies between Globe and Payson north of Roosevelt Lake. Pleasant Valley Ranger District features cool temperatures, beautiful scenery, fishing, hiking, abundant wildlife and bird watching.

Tonto National Forest awarded $3.1 million for hazardous fuel reduction projects in the Arizona Rim Country

PHOENIX (March 11, 2009) – Tonto National Forest officials announced today that the forest has been awarded $3.1 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 for Hazardous Fuel Reduction projects in the Rim Country Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).

ATV recovered from forest theft; Tonto National Forest continues to offer $5,000 reward for recovery of stolen ATV and equipment

Phoenix (January 30, 2009) - Forest Service law enforcement officers announced today that one of two Polaris all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), stolen on Jan 20 from the Cave Creek ranger district storage yard, was recovered today by the Phoenix Police Department. According to Phoenix Police Public Information Officer Luis Samudio, the “suspicious” ATV, reported by a concerned citizen, had been spray-painted in an attempt to disguise the stolen vehicle.

2008 NFMA PLANNING RULE

The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the 2008 Planning Rule has been released. The FEIS identifies the Forest Service’s preferred alternative and is a procedural move towards the implementation of a new planning rule. A decision on the final rule has not been made—that decision will be made by the Department of Agriculture after the FEIS has been available for 30 days. ( News Release | FEIS)

Most forest recreation passes can now be ordered on Tonto National Forest website

Phoenix, AZ. (January 8, 2008) – The Tonto National Forest announced today that forest recreation passes can now be bought via the forest internet site. This includes the half-price Tonto day passes for holders of the national Senior and Access passes. The national Interagency pass can be purchased only in conjunction with the Tonto upgrade.
