KENAI- Gas Storage Agreement Reached
Alaska Region, April 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Natural gas may soon be stored within depleted reservoirs in the Swanson River Oil and Gas Field of Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. A recent environmental assessment and Refuge compatibility determination used multiple mitigation measures to approve the request from Union Oil Company of California to store gas within the Refuge. The area has been developed for oil and gas production since 1957; however, the gas storage venture is new - bringing in gas produced from outside the Refuge and storing it until needed for local utilities or industry during cold winter months. Such gas storage has been deemed critical to maintain services within South-central Alaska until additional gas reserves are found, or new energy sources are employed. The approval is based upon no increase in the current development footprint in the Refuge, no extension of the life of industrial presence, and no measurable change in activities that may impact fish or wildlife. These conditions will be incorporated into a final gas storage agreement to be issued by the Bureau of Land Management.
