Fairbanks Airport- Gateway to Alaska's Northern Wildlands
Alaska Region, March 11, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Air travelers to Fairbanks Airport will be greeted with a jumbo jet of an exhibit on the National Wildlife Refuge System's northern Alaska Refuges. The recently installed 7 feet high by 16 feet wide exhibit highlights six of the wildest and most remote national wildlife refuges in the nation: Koyukuk, Nowitna, Arctic, Kanuti, Yukon Flats, and Selawik. The exhibit is the first of its kind in a series of Visitor Facility Enhancement projects that are aimed for gateway communities and locations around Alaska. Through full color wildlife and wildlands images, a large detailed topographic map, and informative narratives, the exhibit interprets the significance and attractions of these northern jewels of Alaska's National Wildlife Refuge System.

The exhibit also offered an opportunity for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to partner with the National Park Service to tell our parallel stories of public land conservation. In the display the Park Service highlights its northern parks and monuments, including the Gates of the Arctic, Yukon-Charley Rivers, and Western Arctic Parklands. ?We saw this project as an opportunity to come together and share with the public the uniqueness and allure of these public lands? said Todd Logan, Alaska Regional Chief of the National Wildlife Refuge System. When passing through the Fairbanks International Airport make time to venture to the Frontier Airlines gate on the ground level to see the exhibit and learn more about your northern wildlands.
