Annual Refuge Crabbing Rodeo on Pea Island Has Record Year
Southeast Region, June 12, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Saturday, June 12, 2004 was overcast and windy - a bit scary for folks anticipating big success at the annual Crabbing/Fishing Rodeo on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Some people in the 30+ vehicles lined up at 7:30 am said that two years ago, when the weather was similar, they only caught 4 crabs at the event. Their fears were short-lived. The gate opened shortly before 9:00 am, and the "best-ever" Pea Island Crabbing/Fishing Rodeo was underway. By noon, when the 82 children 12 and under gathered at the Visitor Center for prizes, everyone agreed that the 2004 event surpassed all others, both in number of people participating and in number and size of crabs caught. In all, over 124 vehicles carrying approximately 500 people joined in the fun of the 2004 Pea Island Crabbing/Fishing Rodeo; average catch was estimated at 20-25 crabs per person. Not one crab under 5 inches was seen during the event! And, a good time was had by all!!!
