Altered Standards of Care

Draft: Altered Standards of Care Guidance Document

For the past year and a half, a group of health care professionals, attorneys, and ethicists have been carefully crafting a guidance document for hospital staff to use during an influenza pandemic.  In the event of a pandemic, there will likely be a shortage of resources and an excess of patients.  Therefore, difficult patient care decisions will need to be made.  To promote consistency in dealing with these issues, we offer the attached document for your review and comment.  Please consider the following questions as you read the guidance:

As a health care provider, would you be able to implement the guidance as written?  If the answer is no, please suggest revisions.

  • Is the document easy to understand?
  • Are all the pertinent issues addressed?
  • Are there other subjects that should be included in the guidance?
  • What changes would you make to improve the guidance?

Please send comments and questions no later than Friday, October 31, 2008, to Janet Archer at jarcher@isdh.in.gov.
