A threatened amphibian of the Southwest, the Chiricahua leopard frog (Rana chiricahuensis) is native to wetlands in southern and central Arizona, western New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Predation by bullfrogs and other aquatic predators not native to the area, disease, and the modification, destruction, and fragmentation of its habitat have eliminated the Chiricahua leopard frog from most of its historical sites.

The Fish and Wildlife Service is working with the Malpai Borderlands Group, Altar Valley Alliance, Ladder Ranch, San Rafael Ranch, White Mountain Apache and San Carlos Apache tribes, The Nature Conservancy, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Phoenix Zoo, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Arizona Game and Fish Department, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, the State of Sonora, Mexico, university herpetologists and conservation biologists, and other partners to return the Chiricahua leopard frog to a secure status.
