The Water and Fishery Resources Program oversees water and fish issues throughout California, Nevada and the Klamath Basin, from the Klamath River to the Lower Colorado River, and from San Francisco Bay to Eastern Nevada . Within this area, the Program focuses on the conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems.

Responsibilities and Initiatives

Management of National Fish Hatcheries: Coleman, Livingston Stone, and Lahontan.

  • Fish Health Investigations conducted by our Fish Health Laboratory: (CANV FHC).
  • Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA): coordinating implementation on water management and restoration in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta and Central Valley: (Sacramento FWO).
  • Trinity River Restoration through the Trinity River Restoration Act: (Arcata FWO).
  • Anadromous Fish Restoration: in the Klamath River: (Yreka FWO , Arcata FWO) Central Valley,(Red Bluff FWO, Stockton FWO) and coastal streams. (Arcata FWO).
  • Non-native Invasive Species Program: technical assistance to limit the spread of invasives: (Stockton FWO).
  • Restoration and recovery of endangered cui-ui: (Marble Bluff Fish Facility).

Bay Delta Conservation Plan

The Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) is a planning and environmental permitting process to restore habitat for Delta fisheries in a way that reliably delivers water supplies to 25 million Californians. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with other federal and state agencies, environmental organizations, fishery agencies, water agencies, and other organizations are all working together to develop the plan.
