U.S. ATTORNEY’S OFFICE CELEBRATES TENTH ANNUAL UNITED STATES ATTORNEY’S AWARDS

Today, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut hosted the Tenth Annual United States Attorney’s Awards in New Haven.  The ceremony at the Omni New Haven Hotel recognized more than 100 individuals for their investigative efforts in 29 significant federal criminal prosecutions and civil cases in Connecticut over the past year.  The cases demonstrate the broad variety of work performed by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in Connecticut.

U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales attended today’s ceremony and addressed the attendees.

“Today’s ceremony serves as yet another reminder how honored I am to have served as Attorney General, side by side with all the great men and women of federal, state and local law enforcement,” U.S. Attorney General Gonzales stated.

The 29 recognized cases include prosecutions of narcotics trafficking organizations that were dismantled in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Britain and Willimantic; four Project Safe Childhood prosecutions involving crimes against children; two significant environmental cases involving pollution of Connecticut’s waterways; financial fraud cases in which the defendants victimized hundreds of individuals; two Project Safe Neighborhoods prosecutions, including a matter involving a drug-addicted couple who traded their guns for drugs; and prosecutions related to immigration violations, health care fraud, and human trafficking.

Captain Peter C. Boynton, who recently retired from the United States Coast Guard after a 28-year career, and last serving as the Commander of Sector Long Island Sound, received the United States Attorney’s Award for Distinguished Service.

“It is with great pleasure and admiration that we again recognize a group of outstanding men and women for their hard work and contributions to the cause of justice,” U.S. Attorney Kevin J. O’Connor stated.  “Their dedicated efforts make Connecticut a better and safer place to live.”

The United States Attorney’s Office is charged with enforcing federal criminal laws in Connecticut, and with representing the federal government in civil litigation in the District. The Office currently employs approximately 60 attorneys and 50 staff members at offices in New Haven, Hartford and Bridgeport.
