COCAINE TRAFFICKER SENTENCED TO 70 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that JULIO REYES SALAS, age 39, of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, was sentenced on Thursday, May 17, by Senior United States District Judge Peter C. Dorsey in New Haven to 70 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. On October 11, 2006, REYES pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, five kilograms or more of cocaine.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, REYES, Norberto Garcia Vallejo of Puerto Rico, Abimael Navedo of Massachusetts, Hiram Rosario Diaz of Pennsylvania, and Jose Diaz of New Jersey were involved in a narcotics trafficking operation that distributed multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine in several states in the Northeast. REYES was brought into the conspiracy by Vallejo, the leader of the conspiracy, from Puerto Rico to distribute eight kilograms of cocaine to individuals in Massachusetts.

This matter was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Bridgeport Violent Crimes Safe Streets Task Force, which is composed of officers and agents of the Connecticut Statewide Narcotics Task Force, and the Bridgeport, Trumbull, Norwalk and Westport Police Departments. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Felice M. Duffy.
