HARTFORD MAN SENTENCED TO 37 MONTHS FOR INVOLVEMENT IN HEROIN TRAFFICKING CONSPIRACY Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ALEXIS VARGAS, 21, last residing on Allen Drive in Hartford, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford to 37 months of imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release, for conspiring to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin. VARGAS pleaded guilty to the charge on February 23, 2007. According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, on April 18, 2006, VARGAS was arrested by Hartford Police detectives after he was observed engaging in apparent narcotics transactions. Police seized 100 packets of heroin from the vehicle that he occupied during this activity. Police then searched a suspected stash location at 59 School Street in Hartford and discovered approximately 650 grams of raw heroin, various items used to prepare and package heroin for resale, and a loaded, semi-automatic firearm. VARGAS has been in custody since June 17, 2008, at which time the Court revoked his bond after a bond violation hearing. This case was investigated by the Hartford Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert M. Spector. | |
