GROTON LETTER CARRIER ADMITS STEALING CASH AND GIFT CARDS FROM MAIL Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ANGEL CORDERO, 50, of Groton, pleaded guilty today before United States Magistrate Judge Thomas P. Smith in Hartford to one count of delaying and destroying mail. According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, from 1995 until September 5, 2007, CORDERO was a postal letter carrier employed by the United States Postal Service. In pleading guilty, CORDERO admitted that, beginning in April 2007, he stole mail by opening envelopes addressed to postal customers of the Groton, Connecticut Post Office and removing cash and gift cards from those envelopes. On September 5, 2007, CORDERO was observed opening and resealing an envelope addressed to a fictitious individual that had been prepared by postal inspectors for delivery along CORDERO’s route. CORDERO is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant on September 11, 2008, at which time CORDERO faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000. CORDERO also has agreed to pay restitution to 10 identified victims of his criminal behavior. This matter was investigated by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Susan Wines. | |
