Hunting

Located in the southwest corner of Kansas, Morton County offers a wealth of opportunities for the hunter. Over 100,000 acres of the best grassland to be found in the Sunflower State has been preserved for your hunting pleasure. Whether your interest focuses on big game, upland game birds, small game, or varmints, Morton County can fill the bill. The relatively mild climate combined with extensive agricultural cultivation, provide the best of both worlds for wildlife.

The Cimarron National Grassland stretches as far as the eye can see, and is available for public hunting. A major drawing card for hunters is that the Grassland is the largest parcel of public land in the state of Kansas and is located primarily in Morton County, but a small portion extends into neighboring Stevens County. Mule deer, whitetail deer, and pronghorn are the big game animals inhabiting the Grassland, while bobwhite and scaled quail, pheasant, lesser prairie chicken and mourning dove make up the upland game bird population. Cottontail rabbit are abundant, and varmint hunting for coyote and prairie dogs is popular.

Additional information on the Grassland can be obtained by writing Cimarron National Grassland, P.O. Box 300, 242 E. Hwy 56, Elkhart, KS 67950, or by telephoning (620) 697-4621. A map of the Grassland, which is very helpful to hunters, can be obtained by sending $9.00 to this same address, with a note requesting a map. If sending a check, please make out the check to USDA Forest Service.

Whether you will be hunting private lands or public lands a valid Kansas hunting license is required of Kansas residents aged 16-65, and of non-residents regardless of age. Both residents and non-residents born on or after July 1, 1957 must have successfully completed a hunter education course approved by Wildlife and Parks, either in Kansas or in another state, before purchasing a hunting license. All regulations established by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks apply. Be sure to review the latest regulations on the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks website.

Elkhart, Morton County seat, has various vendors and services that are helpful to those who wish to hunt the area. Kansas hunting licenses, ammunition, and equipment are available, as are lodging and restaurant services.
