USAID supports disease surveillance
activities through a variety of programs in many countries.
In 1998 the U.S. Congress authorized an Infectious Disease
Initiative that included funding for infectious disease
surveillance and antimicrobial resistance. Since 1998 USAID
has spent approximately $25-30 million a year on these two
programmatic areas. In FY 2002, this level increased to
$35 million.
