The West Branch Commercial District along Main Street
Outside of and adjacent to the National Historic Site is the West Branch Commercial District, at the intersection of Downey and Main streets in downtown West Branch.
The West Branch Commercial District includes 16 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. While not contemporary to Herbert Hoover's childhood these buildings describe the transformation of downtown West Branch "from a ramshackle assortment of wooden storefronts into a thriving commercial center of ornate brick business blocks (The West Branch Commercial District, July 1987)."
Main Street West Branch, a community organization that promotes businesses, culture, history, and architecture, has more information about visiting the West Branch Commercial District.
The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation's historic places worthy of preservation. The National Register is administered by the National Park Service.
