Fort Hancock's expansion during World War II began with federalizing National Guard soldiers, like these men in 1940.

The personal stories of many generations of both everyday and important figures in history exist with in the park. From artillery soldiers, to famous aviators and military pilots, to lighthouse keepers and lifesavers, to civilian worker, wives, children and social activists these people lived and worked within what is now Gateway NRA.
