Things To Know Before You Come

Operating Hours & Seasons
Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed New Years Day (January 1), Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday of November), Christmas Day (December 25).

Weather and Climate
Summers: warm to hot and humid; occasional thunderstorm; Spring and Fall: cool with rainy periods; Winter: mild and cold; snow and ice possible in January and February. Wear comfortable clothing for the season; good walking shoes.

Available Facilities
Begin your park visit at the visitor center. Here, you will find information on the park and the battle. Rangers or volunteers at the information desk are glad to help you with answers and assistance. Inside the visitor center you will find are a thirty-two minute live-action theater film, "Another Such Victory" (shown on the hour); a ten-minute animated Battle Map Program explaining the tactics of the battle (shown on the :15 and :45 of the hour); and colorful museum exhibits combining informative text with original artifacts and weaponry. A twenty-minute tactile Battle Map program is available to any sight-impaired visitor. Also in the visitor center is a bookstore (operated by Eastern National) offering visitors over 600 publications and theme-related items for sale on the battle and the Revolutionary War. A narrated automobile tour of the battlefield on CD is also available for sale. Bookstore hours are the same as the visitor center.

Activities
Visitors can enjoy walking the foot trails and the historic New Garden Road through the park or biking along the automobile tour road. Although in an urban/suburban setting, the park is home to a variety of wildflowers, birds, small mammals, and reptiles. You may see an occasional deer!

Beware of ticks during the warmer months! Stay on park trails; avoid woods and tall grass. Snakes live in the park, too.

Visitors can also drive the 2 1/4-mile self-guiding automobile tour. An in-car narrated CD tour of the park (allow 2 hrs.) is available for sale in the bookstore.

Twenty-eight monuments within the park honor Revolutionary soldiers, statesmen, heroes, and heroines. William Hooper and John Penn, two of North Carolina's three signers of the Declaration of Independence, are buried under the Signers' Monument. A large equestrian statue of General Nathanael Greene dominates the monument honoring the soldiers of the Southern Army and its leader.

Ranger-conducted interpretive programs during operating hours can be arranged by contacting the park at (336) 288-1776, ext. 228. Any group visit needs to be arranged with the park staff at least two weeks prior to the intended date (the schedule is busiest during the spring and fall). Teachers will find the park an interesting extension of their classroom, whether it is for history (the battlefield), science (nature), or art (monuments).

The anniversary of the battle is March 15 and is annually observed on that day or the weekend closest. Special interpretive programs are scheduled on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and at other times during the year (such special programs are listed on this website under SPECIAL EVENTS).

Greene Monument

Did You Know?
Nathanael Greene, the future American general who emerged from the Revolutionary War second only to George Washington in the pantheon of American military heroes, began the war as a private in a Rhode Island militia company carrying a musket he had purchased from a British deserter from Boston?
