Minority Health: Access to Care Access to primary and specialty care provides the opportunity for early diagnosis, prevention and treatment. People of color are generally in poorer health than whites, and yet are less likely to access state-of-the-art medical care. Financial barriers, due in part to lower rates of health insurance coverage, explain much of the disparities in access to care. However, disparities in health care access persist even among those with insurance coverage. Factors such as communication barriers related to language or culture, the availability of health providers and other care resources, and help-seeking behaviors also affect health care access.
