The New York State Board of Regents voted Monday, July 20, 2009 to elect Dr. David Milton Steiner as New York State Education Commissioner and President of the University of the State of New York. Dr. David Milton Steiner will assume his new post on Thursday, October 1, 2009.

Regents Appoint Carole Huxley as Interim Commissioner
The Board of Regents announced April 21 that Carole F. Huxley has been appointed as Interim New York State Education Commissioner, effective July 1, 2009. She will begin service on May 15, working alongside current Commissioner Mills until he steps down at the end of June.
Program on New Netherland Aired July 5
CBS News Sunday Morning featured a story on the State Library’s New Netherland Project and its study of the Dutch role in America’s social and political foundations. The program focused on the work of Dr. Charles Gehring and his colleagues; it aired on July 5.
1609 Exhibition Opens July 3
Two worlds collided in 1609 when Henry Hudson and the Dutch sailed up the "great river" and met the Native People of New York. "1609" introduces visitors to information about Henry Hudson, Native People of New York, and the Dutch period in New York.
