The Highlights Report is now available for the West African Mayoral Climate Change Congress

 

The final report of the highlights of the very successful African Mayoral Climate Change Declaration – West African pre-COP17 Congress has now been released. Containing a breakdown of the main speakers, statements, events and outcomes, this report also concludes with a list of the Congress recommendations.

ICLEI Africa and UCLGA sign MoU for strengthened local action in Africa towards COP17/CMP7 and beyond

 

The closing plenary of the ‘African Mayoral Climate Change Declaration – West African pre-COP17/CMP7 Congress’ held in Lagos, Nigeria saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – Africa and the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-A).

The African Mayoral Climate Change Declaration – West African pre-COP17 Congress officially began on 21 September 2011 in Lagos, Nigeria.

 

The event, co-hosted by Lagos State Government and ICLEI Africa, saw over 600 participants, including Mayors and other local government representatives from across West Africa meeting to sign the "African Mayors Climate Change Declaration".

Nearly a hundred Local Government representatives - led by his Excellency the Governor of Lagos -  signed the declaration, and the event received extensive coverage in the local and national media.

The ICLEI Africa Secretariat is the ‘hub’ of the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project, based in Cape Town, South Africa. LAB is a global urban biodiversity pilot project running from 2006 to 2009 and working with a select group of local and regional authorities from around the world. Its overarching aim is to improve biodiversity management at the level of local government. The project forms the first step in the broader ICLEI Biodiversity Initiative.
