Purpose
Collaborate with NOAA NS&T and sanctuary programs and with western CMG
to collect sediment grab samples on the Central California Shelf for analysis of
sediment texture, chemical composition, and accumulation of contaminants.
To study water quality, plankton, sediment transport, and sediment
contamination.
Information to be Derived
Sediment samples, deck photos, video, ships navigation
USGS and NOAA: Grain Size; heavy metal, pharmaceutical, petrochemical
contamination, TOC, other organic contaminants of concern, plankton information.
NOAA monitoring contaminants of concern in sediment and conducting water quality
studies.
Summary
Collected over 50 CTD and sediment sampling stations with subsamples
for metals, organics, grain size, pharmaceutical contamination, and
petrochemical contamination. Water column and seafloor sediment sampling. Water
and sediment sampling also conducted around the SF outfall and the sunken vessel
SS Jacob Luchenbach to determine if leaking oil is present on surface and in
bottom sediment.
Notes
Cruise is in response to a short-notice request for assistance
from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
to collect deep water samples.
All times and dates in logs collected in local time.
Shipboard logs collected location information from a
NOAA hand held GPS. All locations on NOAA field log.
